Chocolatería 1902
MORE INFORMATIONOn Calle San Martín 2, just steps from the Puerta del Sol, Chocolatería 1902 has spent more than a century as part of Madrid's culinary history. Founded in 1902 by Don Florencio Gorrachategui, it's now the fifth generation of the family carrying the business forward, keeping alive a tradition and a recipe passed down through the years. Considered Madrid's oldest family of master churro makers, Chocolatería 1902 still prepares its churros by hand, part of a family craft that has run through the house for more than 120 years.
That same commitment to doing things in-house extends to the chocolate. Chocolatería 1902 has its own factory, where it makes its chocolate by hand from a carefully chosen selection of three high-quality South American cacaos. Having its own factory lets the family keep the knowledge and the production process within the house, carrying forward one of the traits that has defined Chocolatería 1902 across generations.
More than 120 years on, the house has managed to hold onto its essence while adapting to the times. Alongside its churros, porras, and traditional chocolate, it now offers gluten-free, lactose-free, and vegan options, letting more and more people enjoy such a distinctly Madrileño tradition.
Beyond its historic location in central Madrid, Chocolatería 1902 also has a presence at Bernabéu Market, inside the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, carrying its family tradition from the city's historic heart to one of its newest culinary landmarks.
Because having churros with chocolate for breakfast in Madrid isn't just about sitting down at a table: it's taking part, for a few minutes, in a tradition that's been passed down from generation to generation since 1902.
